Philosophy, Fantasy and Fandom: B Jeyamohan and Suchitra Ramachandran in conversation with Anjum Hasan | Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series Jaipur Literature Festival 2024

B. Jeyamohan is a Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic who explores mythology, philosophy and fantasy. Jeyamohan's vast and diverse literary oeuvre examines and interprets the essence of India's rich literary classical traditions. His prolific output also includes film scripts for Malayalam and Tamil cinema, including Ozhimuri, Kaanchi, Naan Kadavul, Kadal, 2.0, Venthu Thaninthathu Kaadu and Ponniyin Selvan. Writer and translator Suchitra Ramachandran has translated Jeyamohan's Ezhaam Ulagam or 'The Abyss' into English. In conversation with writer Anjum Hasan, they discuss the multilayered narratives explored by Jeyamohan through his rich writing life and the many nuances of translation.

B. Jeyamohan is a pre-eminent writer in modern Tamil literature and has authored more than two hundred books, spanning novels, short fiction, travelogues, literary criticism and essays on heritage and philosophy, amongst others. Apart from containing critically acclaimed works such as Vishnupuram and Kottravai, Jeyamohan’s oeuvre includes a 26-part novel called Venmurasu, a post-modern reimagination of the Mahabharata in 2020. Spanning more than 25,000 pages, it is perhaps the longest literary work in the world. Jeyamohan also wrote a sequence of 125 stories, one for each day of the pandemic-induced lockdowns in 2020. He has received the Akilan Memorial Prize, the Katha Award, the Sanskriti Samman and the Iyal Award. He has formed the Vishnupuram Literary Circle and recently launched the ‘Tamil Wiki’ encyclopaedia. Jeyamohan achieved acclaim for Ozhimuri, a Malayalam film adapted from his book Uravidangal. His credits also include writing for successful films like Naan Kadavul, Kadal, 2.0, Venthu Thaninthathu Kaadu, and Ponniyin Selvan.

Suchitra Ramachandran is a writer and translator from Madurai, India. The Abyss, her debut book-length translation of Jeyamohan’s Tamil novel was published this year to critical acclaim. She is a winner of the Asymptote Close Approximations contest for Periyamma’s Words, a short story by the same author.

Anjum Hasan’s latest novel is History’s Angel. She is the author of The Cosmopolitans, Neti,Neti, Lunatic in my Head, Difficult Pleasures, and a book of poems, Street on the Hill. She has been a Homi Bhabha Fellow, a Charles Wallace Writer-in-Residence and is currently a New India Foundation Fellow.
