STORYLINE
Israeli artillery and Apache helicopters pounded the large Lebanese border village of Maroun al-Ras on Sunday as Israel's offensive against Hezbollah entered its twelfth day.
Israeli soldiers had battled militants throughout the day on Saturday, raiding Maroun al-Ras in several waves before finally taking control, military officials said.
In an act of defiance, a Hezbollah flag was posted on Sunday morning near the town.
More than 30 local residents have taken refuge at the United Nation observers' outpost here.
Almost the entire remaining population of the village, which had swelled from 1,500 to 2,300 with summer visitors before the crisis broke out, are believed to have fled, according to Lebanese security officials.
Maroun al-Ras, like many border villages, is now nearly empty.
But as Israeli troops advance into Lebanon, they are likely to encounter towns and villages where tens of thousands are believed still trapped in their homes.
Meanwhile, more Israeli ground forces were moving towards the Israel Lebanon border on Sunday morning.
A convoy of military vehicles and soldiers was seen on the highway near Kiryat Shemona in northern Israel en route to positions along the border.
The growing use of ground forces, 12 days into the fighting, signalled Israeli recognition that its air strikes alone were not enough to drive Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon.
Israeli military officials have said they want to push Hezbollah beyond the Litani River, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of the border, with the Lebanese army deploying in the border zone.
More than 373 people, the vast majority of them civilians, have been killed in Lebanon.
Fifteen Israeli civilians and 20 soldiers have also died since the fighting erupted twelve days ago.
