In the 19th century, China faced one of its darkest chapters — the Opium Wars. What began as a trade dispute with Britain over opium quickly escalated into a devastating conflict that reshaped the nation’s destiny.
As opium addiction ravaged Chinese society, Emperor Daoguang sought to end the trade, leading to a direct clash with British forces. The resulting First Opium War (1839–1842) ended in defeat for the Qing Dynasty, forcing China to sign the Treaty of Nanking, ceding Hong Kong and opening ports to foreign control.
This moment marked the beginning of China’s “Century of Humiliation” — a time of struggle, resistance, and awakening that would inspire generations to reclaim sovereignty and strength.
