History of Norwegian Christmas Traditions (Juletradisjoner i Norge) [Christmas Documentary]

In this video we explore the history and origins of Norwegian Christmas traditions which are still practised today. Beginning in Advent, we cover the likes of Advent Candles (Adventslys), Advent Calendar (Adventskalender), Christmas Markets (Julemarked), Christmas Cards (Julekort) and the mysterious origins of the Julenisse.

Then it’s indoor decorations such as the Christmas Tree (Juletre), Christmas Tree lights (Juletrelys), Moravian Star (Adventsstjerne). Afterwards we head outside and take a look at the history of Christmas lights (Julelys), Julenek and the Snowman (Snømann).

We head back inside to examine Christmas entertainment such as Kvelden før Kvelden, Dinner for One, Three Wishes for Cinderella and more.

Afterwards, it’s Christmas baking (Julebakst) and Christmas food (Julemat), such as Ribbe and Pinnekjøtt. Then we examine Christmas beverages including Aquavit (Akevitt), Mulled wine (Gløgg), Julebrus and Malt beer (Maltøl). That’s followed by Riskrem and the King of the Bean (Mandel i Grøten) tradition.

To conclude, there’s a recap of the history of Christmas gifts and Christmas breakfast (Julefrokost).
