What REALLY Happened During Operation Khukri?
This is not just a podcast, it is a living chapter of military history that proves why the Indian Army never bows under pressure. In this powerful episode of SPP Uncut Podcast, Lucky Bisht speaks with Major General Rajpal Punia about one of the most daring and respected operations ever conducted under a United Nations mission Operation Khukri. The year was 2000 and the location was Sierra Leone, Africa, where Indian troops were deployed as part of a UN peacekeeping force. What began as a peace mission quickly turned into a deadly situation when one of the world’s most brutal terrorist organizations, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), took control of the region. The RUF was led by its notorious leader Foday Sankoh, and on the ground the terror was commanded by Sam “Mosquito” Bockarie, a name that struck fear across the country. RUF fighters surrounded UN forces from all sides, cutting off supplies and completely isolating them. The terrorists gave only one condition if you want to go back alive, surrender your weapons. Under extreme pressure, most UN forces laid down their arms, but the Indian Army refused. Major General Rajpal Punia and Indian soldiers made it clear that survival without honour was never an option. Most of the Indian troops trapped during this crisis belonged to the Gorkha Rifles, a regiment known worldwide for its fearlessness and close-combat spirit. The traditional weapon of the Gorkha soldier is the Khukri, a blade that symbolizes courage, resolve, and the will to fight till the end. It was this very spirit of the Gorkha Rifles that inspired the name Operation Khukri, representing not just a rescue mission but a mindset that Indian soldiers would fight their way out if needed, not surrender. What followed were 75 days of captivity filled with psychological pressure, threats, uncertainty, and constant danger, yet the morale of Indian soldiers never broke. India then took a decisive and historic call. On 15 July 2000, Operation Khukri was launched. This was not a symbolic rescue or a negotiated withdrawal; it was a full-scale combat operation. Indian troops fought through hostile terrain and dense jungles, engaged RUF fighters head-on, broke the siege, rescued their men, and returned with weapons in hand and heads held high. Operation Khukri was not just about bringing soldiers back, it was about leadership, courage, discipline, regimental pride, and national honour, and it sent a clear message to the world that an Indian soldier especially a Gorkha may be surrounded, outnumbered, and isolated, but he will never surrender his weapon or his honour. This episode reveals the real ground truth of Operation Khukri, the brutality of the RUF, the leadership mindset of Major General Rajpal Punia, and why this operation is still remembered as one of the most courageous UN military missions in history.
