In this episode of DJs BrewTube Johnny and I join forces to review Ale Smith Old Numbskull Barley Wine Ale. Ale Smith Old Numbskull Barley Wine Ale is an American Barley WIne that clocks in at, 11.0% ABV. Ale Smith describes their Old Numbskull Barley Wine Ale as:

"Old Numbskull is AleSmith's first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor."

This description sounds quote pleasant. I think. Let see if the beer lives up to the impressive description. My written review follows:

Ale Smith Old Numbskull Barley Wine Ale WRITTEN REVIEW:

A: Ale Smith Old Numbskull Barley Wine Ale pours a mahogany color topped off with a 1.5 to 2 finger super tight tan head.

S: There are aromas of caramel malts and citrus hops in the background in the nose along side some dark fruits. The citrus becomes more dominant as the beer warms up.
No alcohol aroma is detectable in the the nose.

T: Hello hops. Lots of citrus especially grapefruit with a caramel aftertaste that lingers. Also sweet but not cloyingly so. There are some dark fruits playing nicely in the back ground. The alcohol for an 11% ABV brew is super well masked.

M: Full bodied with some alcohol warmth as it goes down. Smooth carbonation that imparts a high level of drinkability.

O: Ale Smith Old Numbskull Barley Wine Ale is overall an excellent American Barley Wine. While I prefer English Barley Wines this American Barley Wine is so well done that it works well and I enjoyed it very much. This coupled with that fact that it is a year-rounds offering sold at a value price make Old Numbskull a beer work seeking out.
