STEAM Cafe: Crazy Horse Memorial - The Science Behind 75 Years of Stone Carving

Описание к видео STEAM Cafe: Crazy Horse Memorial - The Science Behind 75 Years of Stone Carving

Presented by Dr. Caleb Ziolkowski, chief mountain officer at the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.

Mountain carving draws on a variety of disciplines, often in surprising ways. Crazy Horse Memorial, the world's largest carving, has seen a wide variety of methods and approaches since its inception 75 years ago. Dr. Caleb Ziolkowski, who currently heads the project as chief mountain officer, will offer a high-level account of how the approach to carving has changed over the years, with emphasis on how current efforts involve technology, engineering, mathematics, and — in the broadest sense — science to produce art on a grand scale.

What’s the STEAM Café?

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Hay Camp Brewing Company, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting have teamed up to create STEAM Café, which will be held at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at Hay Camp. Join us for drinks and enjoy a talk by a member of the Mines family. Collaborative programs, cutting edge research and historical perspectives on everything from gothic literature to the impact of motherhood are just a few cool things that you’ll learn about at these fun gatherings. The STEAM Café is a place to share new ideas, forge new friendships and grow as a community.
