As a correspondent for The New York Times, Steven Lee Myers worked for years in Moscow. This year he published the first big critically acclaimed biography of Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin. A story of how Putin grew up in the streets of St. Petersburg and worked his way up through the KGB to become the leader of the biggest country on earth. Myers will speak at De Balie about the man behind the powerful leader. Who is this man who has such a tight grip on Russia and managed to become one of the most consequential and complicated leaders in modern history.

On one hand, Putin’s many reforms—from tax cuts to an expansion of property rights—have helped reshape the potential of millions of Russians whose only experience of democracy had been crime, poverty, and instability after the fall of the Soviet Union. On the other hand, Putin has ushered in a new authoritarianism, unyielding in his brutal repression of revolts and squashing of dissent. Still, he retains widespread support from the Russian public. Who is this man?

Myers will speak about his book and talk with Dutch experts about the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
