Korean-American pianist and educator Soyeon Kate Lee is an internationally acclaimed artist whose performances and recordings are beloved by audiences and praised by critics. I winner of piano world’s top awards she is now herself on the jury of many competitions and her students are following her footsteps by shining brightly on the piano competition’s stages around the world. We talk about our experiences together as contestants in many of these competitions and how a true friendship and collegial relationships can germinate in this environment. We also talk about surviving the competitive element of competitions and remaining a sensitive and open-hearted individual while performing under pressure.
Her Clementi and Scriabin CDs with NAXOS label are evidence of her uniquely sincere music making and remarkable attention to details. Together with her husband - celebrated Israeli-American pianist Ran Dank Kate founded Music By The Glass - Chamber music series held at Louis. B. Meisel Gallery in SoHo, NYC which provides a trendy social setting to music and wine lovers. The premium wines are paired with the evening’s program and the event begins and conclude with a social mixer. Always a sold-out event in New York MBTG became a cultural fixture of Manhattan’ s music scene. We talk about how it came to be and what it takes to run a classical music non-for-profit.
Soyeon Kate Lee is a Juilliard alumna and is currently on the faculty at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She is a proud mother of two.
