Battery is part of electric vehicle (EV) which has relatively short lifetime. With the growth of EVs, battery waste will become burdens for the environment. In fact, the used EV batteries, although not performing fully, normally still have sufficient capacity for applications which are not as strict as EV. One of the applications assessed in this research is the utilization of retired lithium-ion battery from electric motorcycle for solar street light to extend the life cycle of the battery in a battery second use or B2U scheme. This paper reports the development of a solar street light powered by retired electric motor cycle’s battery with the nominal voltage of 60 V using off-the-shelf PV-module with MPP (maximum power point) voltage of 17.8 V. The system uses MPPT charge controller which has built-in boost converter and used to light up 4 x 3 W LED chips. Design and laboratory functional test of over-discharge protection circuit and light switch, along with measurement of MPPT properties, charging and discharging characterizations of a used battery were performed. The results showed that with a degraded battery with 50% of state of health, it is still able to light up 4 x 3 W LED lamp for 97 hours, equivalent to 8 days of autonomy for 12 hours daily on-time, which is more than sufficient for street lighting applications.
