0:48 Foreplay– Boston
"Foreplay" is the first song Tom Scholz recorded for what was to become Boston. He wrote it in 1969 when he was studying at MIT and recorded it in 1971 with drummer Jim Masdea in Masdea's basement studio. Over the next few years, Scholz made various demo recordings with Masdea supplying drums. When Boston finally got a record deal in 1976, Masdea was replaced by Sib Hashian.

2:37 Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) - Journey
Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain and lead vocalist Steve Perry wrote this song on tour during a period when two of the band members were going through painful divorces due to the stresses (and temptations) of life on the road. According to Journey's Time3 compilation, with guitarist Neal Schon and bass player Ross Valory going through painful - and expensive - divorces, Perry and Cain thought there should be some way to dredge something positive out of such circumstances.

7:21 The Way You Make Me Feel – Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson wrote many of his hit song by himself, including "Billie Jean" and "Beat It." This is another example one he wrote, although it's not nearly as personal as many of his compositions. According to the book Jackson's Number Ones, he wrote this song after his mother Katherine asked him to write a song with "a shuffling kind of rhythm."

11:51 "Crazy on You" - Heart

17:25 "Sympathy for the Devil" - The Rolling Stones

21:20 Thriller – Michael Jackson
This is a rare pop song with a horror theme. Halloween novelty songs like "Monster Mash" had been around for a while, but this was the first hit song with year-round appeal containing lyrics about creatures of the night who terrify their victim. At the time, Michael Jackson was one of the least frightening people on Earth, so the video had to sell it. John Landis, who worked on the 1981 movie An American Werewolf In London, was brought in to direct. Landis had Jackson turn into a Werewolf in the video.
Can you remember the first time you saw or heard Thriller?
