The tragic death of Zara Qairina has left many Malaysians shocked and heartbroken, sparking an outpouring of solidarity against bullying. Across social media, countless voices have come together to demand justice, to remember her life, and to remind us that no child should ever have to endure what she faced. But alongside this sincere grief and awareness, a strange and unsettling phenomenon has emerged—one that raises difficult questions about the lines between solidarity, storytelling, and exploitation.
In the weeks since her passing, Zara’s name has become a kind of cultural currency. YouTube channels have pivoted entirely to her story, churning out case breakdowns, AI-generated songs, and endless “Justice for Zara” content. Some creators may be motivated by genuine empathy, yet others seem driven by the pursuit of views, subscribers, and clout. Beyond digital content, there are even merchandise sellers capitalizing on the tragedy, producing t-shirts, stickers, and posters under Zara’s name. While some justify this as a form of awareness, it is hard to ignore how easily grief can be commercialized and distorted into profit.
This video explores that uneasy tension. Where does solidarity end and exploitation begin? Do awareness campaigns, no matter how opportunistic, still serve a purpose if they reach more people? Or does the commodification of tragedy risk desecrating the very memory it claims to honor? Zara Qairina deserves more than to be reduced to a trend or a keychain. Her story is a reminder not only of the consequences of bullying, but of the responsibility each of us carries when we engage with such tragedies. Whether we create, share, or consume, we must ask ourselves what it means to truly respect her memory—and what lessons we are willing to take away.
