Rhett Mc Carthy embarks on a flavorful journey through the streets of St. John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, alongside Lori from Eat ’N Lime Food Tours.
The tour kicks off at the bustling Heritage Quay—one of the Caribbean’s most prestigious duty-free shopping complexes. From there, the walking food tour leads to Annette’s Fine Dining for a traditional Antiguan breakfast. On the menu: fried bake, saltfish, vegetable chop-up (bhagi, baigan, ochro), boiled egg, and salad.
After a brief stop to learn some fascinating history about the islands, we headed to Big Banana Bar for a freshly mixed rum punch—made with Cavalier rum, lime juice, simple syrup, Angostura aromatic bitters, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Next door, we also sampled fungi, a key component of Antigua and Barbuda’s national dish, served with mussels.
Continuing up the road, we stopped by Smoothie Palace, where the owner, Eddie, whipped up a refreshing fruit smoothie using freshly picked mangoes, pineapple, coconut milk, and lime juice.
Rehydrated and ready, we made our way to Soldier Boy to sample one of his many famous soups: chicken, bull foot, pork and beans, vegetable, corn and smoked turkey, conch water, goat water, souse, seafood chowder, and fish water.
Rhett chose the goat water—a hearty, richly seasoned goat stew that ended up being the absolute highlight of the tour. Another standout was the chicken roti (dhalpuri) from Roti King, served with curried potatoes—bursting with flavor and reminiscent of home in Trinidad and Tobago.
The final stop was at One Stone Ital Shack, a beloved local spot known for its vegan and Ital creations. There, we tasted spinach and potato fritters alongside freshly made passionfruit juice.
To top it all off, Lori surprised us with Dutty Gyal (also known as Sugar Cake), and we each received tamarind balls to take home. All in all, this was a delicious, immersive, and thoroughly enjoyable tour—a perfect way to experience Antigua and Barbuda for the first time!
