Reading is a skill, not a virtue. If you like reading, great! That doesn’t make you a better person than someone who doesn’t. However, reading is at least one of the most foundational skills in our society, maybe even at the top of the list. Unfortunately, for some people, reading isn’t just tiresome, it’s psychologically painful. And the ubiquity of text means that they are confronted with that pain on a regular basis.

So as an English teacher, I am definitely interested in ways to reduce that pain and make it possible (even if not a guarantee every time) for resistant readers to find joy in reading. And one way to do that is by having students participate in independent reading during class.
