India is home to innumerable fort-cities, fortified palaces and fortresses, built by the countless rajas (kings), baadshahs & maharajas (emperors), and smaller senapatis (chieftains/warlords) and zamindaars (landowners). Usually, as in all forts and castles around the world, they were built by the powerful feudal lord, or royal personage, for his own use, as a safe haven for his family, an administrative centre and/or as the capital city/town of his empire.
Usually around such an important fortified set-up, a hamlet/township, whose residents supported the fort's inhabitants, would come up. So, farmers, animal rearers, skilled craftsmen and defense forces would stay around these fort towns. A huge number of forts in India are also completely self-sustaining, fortified towns/cities, where the feudal lord's/royal areas are separate from the rest of support townsfolk, all living together inside the large, well-planned fortified city walls.

In the diverse local languages, we have in India, forts are known by many names. Normally the fort names are suffixed by the local word for 'Fort', like the Sanskrit word दुर्ग (durg), or Hindustani Urdu word क़िला (quila) or the word गढ़ (garh or gadh) or कोट (kot) in West & Central India.
