On 16th August 2025, the RE Himalayan carried me from the quiet wilderness of Omaruru Game Lodge to the windswept port town of Walvis Bay. The saying “there is a Malayali in every corner of the world” suddenly felt less like a phrase and more like a living truth, one I witnessed with my own eyes.
As dawn broke on the 17th and I rolled on, I had no idea that the road ahead was about to test me. The gravel tracks of the Namib Desert rose to meet my wheels, each mile silently shaping me for challenges yet to come. I crossed the scenic GAUB mountain pass and tropic of Capricorn to reach my destination, Hammerstein Lodge which stood deep within the Namib desert, a gateway to one of the world’s most iconic desert landscapes, where the journey itself became the story. The loose gravel and soft sand tested my skills and patience. There was no sign of humans for many hours in the desert trails. The small hotel solitaire was a relief in the middle of nowhere. It was literally rush against time through the gravel roads.
