Which Came First: The Chicken or the Egg? 🐔🥚

1. Millions of years ago There were small meat-eating dinosaurs called theropods (like Velociraptor). Over a long time, some of these dinosaurs started to evolve features like feathers, lighter bones, and wings.


2. Early birds:
These changes eventually led to the first early birds, such as Archaeopteryx. It still looked a bit like a dinosaur but could glide or maybe fly short distances.


3. Red junglefowl:
As evolution continued, different bird species appeared. One of these was the red junglefowl, a wild bird that still lives in Southeast Asia today. It’s basically the wild ancestor of chickens.


4. Domestication by humans:
Thousands of years ago, humans began domesticating (taming and breeding) red junglefowl for food and eggs. Over time, people bred the birds that had useful traits — like being fatter, calmer, or laying more eggs.


5. The first true chicken:
At some point, one bird that was almost a chicken (a “proto-chicken”) laid an egg. Inside that egg, a tiny DNA mutation happened — a small change in the genetic code.
That mutation made the chick that hatched genetically different enough to be the first true chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus).


6. Modern chickens:
Humans kept breeding the offspring of that chicken for thousands of years, selecting traits they liked (bigger size, more eggs, different colors, etc.). This process created all the modern chicken breeds we have today.


That egg — laid by a “proto-chicken” — contained the mutation that made the chick inside it the first chicken.
So:

A bird that wasn’t a chicken laid an egg that hatched the first chicken.



Hence, the egg came before the chicken.
