echnician recruiting tip of the month
Tech recruiting today is a courtship, not speed dating
I must share this story from a long-time ACT Employer. And actually I have heard this same story quite a few times since his experience.
“Joe, I have not used your system in a couple of years and I am ready to sign-up again, anything different?” the employer asked.
I told him that despite using our system just a few years ago to find Techs that when he just posted his ad, he would get some really good responses. But now it’s different …..
“Yes”, he said, “I did get great response to my ad on your site last time, so won’t that happen again?” he asked.
I responded, “Unlike a few years ago you now must ALSO ‘Court’ techs because they all have a job. You have to call, text, email, and talk with them, and court them to move to your shop.”
I could tell he was not happy with that response …..
Fast forward 3 months later and I get a call from the same long-time client. ”Joe, I have to share something with you. You remember that you told me I had to pursue the candidate techs. I have to tell you I completely disregarded your statement after I got signed back up. But after waiting a week after my ad was activated, the same ad that brought me great response, I got no response.”
“(sigh) I then remembered what you said. I saw a tech’s resume I had talked to my last time I used your system. He was a good guy but we never could put something together back then. So, I called, emailed and texted him a couple of times with no response! Tried him the 3rd time and actually caught him on his cell.”
“When the tech and I talked, he told me he was happy where he was and was not interested in making a move!”
“I then asked the tech why he kept his resume active if he was happy. He told me that ACT sends him great information on trends and the latest offers of employers. So I asked the tech, ‘well, share with me what do you NOT like about your present employer?’ He opened up ….”.
“Next thing you know Joe, I had him meet me for coffee, we talked, As he got more comfortable he agreed to come down to my shop and take a look around. I had him talk to another one of my techs. “
“Joe, that was 2 months ago and he has been with me now for a month and is super happy and I got another great tech off of ACT Auto Staffing.’
“But I got to tell you Joe, when you first told I had to court these techs, I thought you lost your marbles! But then after that dry week of my fresh ad and no response, I figured I better follow your advice!”
Lesson here? - Simply put: It is a numbers game.
So, you can sit back and feel sorry for yourself because this seems an insurmountable task, OR TAKE ACTION!
