Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Today, we’re awash in the Ethereal, from Wampler Pedals. The Ethereal is an all-inclusive ambience machine that combines a unique double-layered delay with a dead-simple reverb circuit to create atmospheric washes of time and space. Both delay and reverb circuits were designed from the ground up for maximum interplay as the effects meld together. The heart of the Ethereal is the Delay Mode switch, located front and center. Selecting any of these modes adds an additional repeat on top of the main quarter-note, and you can add an eighth note, triplet or an extra quarter and eighth that feed back in an interesting way. When selecting a new mode, the delay engine is split into individual paths, and each path is fed into the machine. Each delay path get the deluxe treatment, including a maximum of one second of delay time, and as few as ten milliseconds. The multiple layers of delay creates a dense fog of repeats that is capable of flooding your signal path, which is just the ticket for shoegaze and dream pop players. Dedicated Feedback and Delay Mix controls keep the action in check, while a Tone control lightens or darkens the repeats. When the Tone control is rolled back, you get murky, tape-style repeats, and bright, digital repeats when rolled up. The one-knob delay circuit mixes in a tasteful cloud of gentle reverb that trails the delay and thickens the sound dramatically. The reverb circuit is engineered for a generous decay time that is incredibly interactive with the Tone control. If you’d prefer to have your trails keep going when the Ethereal is off, a handy pushbutton switch on the side engages buffered bypass or true bypass switching modes. And just like all Wampler’s pedals, the Ethereal is made right here in the states by folks who know tone.
