Am Ende hat Barrie Kosky ja gesagt: Auf dem Grünen Hügel inszeniert der Intendant der Komischen Oper Berlin derzeit „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“. Das Ergebnis ist am 25. What do you do, when Bayreuth calls? You take time to think about it... Ultimately, Barrie Kosky said yes. The artistic director of the Komische Oper Berlin is directing Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at this year’s Bayreuther Festspiele.

“When Katharina Wagner asked me to direct the opera, in Bayreuth, she said: ‘How much time would you need to decide?’ And I said: ‘Give me six months. I need to find something in the opera that I can work with.’

For the first four of the six months, I didn’t find anything. It’s always the same with the Meistersingers: What do you do? How would you set the stage in the twenty-first century? Too much C major! It’s not funny! What’s with the Beckmesser character? What does the play mean? All of these questions.

On the last day, just before the two-month deadline, I was about to call Katharina and say: ‘Katharina, I can’t. Sorry. I’m in Berlin and have other things I have to do.’.

But then I read some of Wagner’s letters, and Cosima’s diaries, and I found that the key to this work is his biography, the connection between Wagner and Hans Sachs, and Cosima and Eva. Then I thought of Nuremberg. What does Nuremberg mean for Germany historically and artistically? And all of a sudden, me and my team had something to work with. We started developing ideas almost instantly.

I hesitated for a few weeks and thought: ‘Let’s see if this is enough for a whole concept.’ And then I said: ‘Let’s do it.’ So, next I called Katharina and said: ‘Showtime. Let’s go!’”
