Today I want to show you how to clean your dog's teeth.
Every time you take your dog to the vet, the doctor must examine your dogs mouth.
When should I take my dog to my vet to have his mouth check? Bad breath, swelling around the mouth or face, trouble chewing or dropping their food, discomfort such as pawing at their mouth or rubbing the mouth or face with the paws or the ground, excessive drooling and persistent sneezing can be symptoms of painful inflammation of the gums, infection and even dental abscess and and they must be taken to the veterinarian since they may need other treatments and they can be very sensitive to dental cleaning at home.
Cleaning your dog’s teeth at home is an inexpensive way to maintain the oral health of your pet. If we do not clean their teeth, they will end up accumulating plaque and dental tartar, they will be more prone to infections that begin in the teeth and can travel to other organs such as kidneys, heart, liver and even become systemic. If we do not clean and take care of their teeth from a young age, in the future they will need more expensive care such as extractions and tooth cleanings performed by your veterinarian under anesthesia.
This is Sofia, one of our patients today, a 15 year old Long hair Dachshound and I want to show you her teeth. Sofia has dental plaque which is a yellow sticky film that contains bacteria, forms between the teeth and along the gum line.
This is Lilly, a 10 year old. Lilly has dental tartar, also called calculus, which is plaque that has hardened due to mineral deposits. It can form on the edge and under the gums and can lead to swollen gums. Tartar is very difficult to remove by brushing the teeth and Lilly will need a dental cleaning performed by a veterinarian under anesthesia. There are some products that may help soften the tartar but it will depend on each specific case and you will have to discuss this with your veterinarian.
How often do I need to brush my dogs teeth? Ideally is to brush their teeth daily and on both sides of the tooth, but it will depend on the cooperation you get from your dog and your skills. If you can’t do it every day, try a minimum of three times a week and concentrate on the canines and the back molars which are the teeth that accumulate more dental plaque. But remember, the more you do it, you will get better and you will learn what works for you and your dog.
What should I use to clean my dogs teeth? The choice depends on what is easier for you. You can use a normal toothbrush, make sure has soft bristle. I prefer for large dogs, I can get better to the back molars. You can use a a fingerbrush, personally, I prefer for small dogs or puppies, gives me more control or you can use dental wipes, they have an antibacterial product on them and I prefer for small dogs or dogs with sensitive mouth.
Always use a specific toothpaste for dogs, they can swallow it, does not need to be rinsed and does not contain fluoride or xylitol, which are very toxic for your dog. It also comes in different flavors, like chicken and beef and dogs usually love it.
There are also sprays, gels, powders to put on food, additives to water, dental treats, chews and prescription dental diets that can help but are not going to do the job of brushing their teeth. If you are not able to brush your dogs teeth at home, your veterinarian can recommend some of this products.
I start by offering him treats, then I offer him a little bit of toothpaste right off my finger to see if he likes it. He is very interested on the toothpaste.I put a pea side toothpaste on the toothbrush.
Teeth cleaning must be done gradually. Get your pet used to teeth cleaning from a young age. Start slowly and carefully. Start brushing when he starts enjoying and licking the toothpasteI. If possible, with one hand lift their lip to expose their teeth and gums. while you brush with the other hand. You can also use your thumb to push the lip away from the teeth. The teeth that accumulate more dental plaque are the upper back molars and the canines. When you finish brushing their teeth, give them a special treat.
If he gets skittish I stop and get another treat out. if you find them reluctant to the cleaning or they don’t like it, stop and try again a few days later.
I continue giving him treats to keep his attention
