In June of 1937, the Jell Brothers, George and Frank, were nearing completion of the new Hotel Cracow building.
Cracow publicans, Agnes & Alfred Jarvis, commenced their business in the neighbouring shop until the hotel was built.
For Alfred Jarvis, this was the catalyst for years of hard work; having used his local notoriety to protest Cracow's alcohol prohibition and bring forward partitions for an official Cracow Hotel, which he bought the tender for in 1935.
Alfred's years of work and community activism was finally about to fruition, but not everybody was pleased with the fruits of his labour.
A group of employees at the local Golden Plateau mine felt discriminated against due to the Cracow Hotels beer prices; many of them couldn't afford to resume their usual drinking habits in this new 5-star establishment. They felt cheated, and that something had to be done about it.
