Two Seals Rescued from Extreme Fishing Line Cuts

Описание к видео Two Seals Rescued from Extreme Fishing Line Cuts

As you well know, fishing line is one of the most common waste materials we find entangling our Cape Fur Seals at Pelican Point. Usually the line is thick and does not always cause major damage to the animals.
In this video Antoine and Naude capture 2 seals that are bound in thin fishing line. The problem with the thin line is that it cuts into the skin of the animals much quicker, causing immense pain and damage, often leading to death.
The first seal is a big female with only one loop of line around her neck. This line has been on her for so long that it has grown over in some places. There are knots in the line, so once cut, the rescuers could not simply pull it out. They tried from a few different angles but decided to let her go instead of causing more pain and potential damage.
The second rescue is a small pup that had multiple strands of thin line around his chest and also some through his mouth. The line was cutting into his lips and would also prevent him from being able to feed.
After release he hung around Antoine and Naude for a little while. We like to think it was his way of saying "thank you". 🦭
