CBXT first signed on in 1961 as Edmonton's second television station and replaced CFRN as the city's CBC station. CFRN would join the upstart CTV network.. In 1991, due to budget cuts, the CBC decided to merge the news operations in Calgary and Edmonton into one single province-wide newscast. The newscasts were anchored out of Edmonton and the ratings for the new newscast dropped significantly in both markets. Sometime in the mid-90s, the newscasts were anchored with one person in Calgary and one in Edmonton. The failed experiment was brought to an end in 1997, where local news production was brought back to Edmonton. However, in 2000, further budget cuts caused the CBC to relaunch their evening news operations as "Canada Now", with the first 30 minutes anchored out of Vancouver featuring national and international news and the last 30 minutes locally produced in Edmonton focusing on local news. Hour length local newscasts were brought back in 2007.
