한 국가의 사상과 철학은 경제활동의 단위인 화폐 속 인물의 모습에서 가장 명확하게 드러난다. 기존 화폐의 오천원권에 등장하는 율곡 이이의 어머니인 신사임당은 새로운 오만원권 화폐의 주인공으로 선정되었다. 어머니와 아들이 나란히 화폐의 인물로 선정된 것은 세계적으로도 유래가 없는 일이다. 조선의 대학자인 율곡 선생을 낳고 교육시킨 어머니의 위치로만 신사임당이 우리나라 여성인물을 대표하는 것은 아니다. 그의 시와 문장, 글씨와 그림은 남성 위주의 조선 시대에도 탁월하였다. 오죽헌은 신사임당의 친정집이다. 신사임당의 외할아버지인 최응현의 집으로 본채는 소실되었다.
남아 있는 몽룡실은 사임당이 33세에 셋째 아들 이이 선생을 출산한 곳으로 중국 주자학을 철학적 사상으로 발전시킨 조선 성리학의 탄생지이다. 몽룡실은 우리나라에 남아 있는 가장 오래된 민가 건축물로 알려져 있다. 남아 있는 안채와 함께 1975년 시작된 성역화 정비 사업을 거쳐 율곡의 영정을 모신 사당인 문성사, 자경문 등이 들어서 대규모 기념 공간이 되었다. 가옥 뒤편의 작은 정원을 빽빽하게 채우는 검은빛의 오죽으로 둘러싸인 율곡기념관에서 사임당의 그림과 율곡 선생의 편지와 상소문을 볼 수 있다. 함께 있는 강릉시립박물관은 굴산사지의 유물과 진전사지의 불상 등으로 꾸며져 이 지역의 역사와 문화를 살필 수 있게 한다.

A nation's ideology and philosophy are most clearly revealed in the portraits of its figures on currency, the unit of economic activity. Shin Saimdang, mother of Yulgok Yi I, who appears on the existing 5,000 won note, has been selected as the face of the new 50,000 won note. The fact that both a mother and a son are featured on currency is unprecedented worldwide. Shin Saimdang's role as the mother who gave birth to and educated the great Joseon scholar Yulgok is not the only reason she represents Korean women. Her poetry, prose, calligraphy, and paintings were exceptional even during the male-dominated Joseon Dynasty. Ojukheon is Shin Saimdang's maternal home. The main building, the residence of her maternal grandfather, Choi Eung-hyeon, has been destroyed by fire.
The remaining Mongryongsil is where Saimdang gave birth to her third son, Yi I, at the age of 33. It is the birthplace of Joseon Neo-Confucianism, which developed Chinese Neo-Confucianism into a philosophical ideology. Mongryongsil is known as the oldest surviving private house in Korea. Together with the remaining main building, a sanctuary restoration project that began in 1975 led to the construction of Munseongsa Shrine, a shrine housing Yulgok's portrait, and Jagyeongmun Gate, transforming the building into a large-scale memorial space. Surrounded by dense black bamboo trees that fill a small garden behind the house, the Yulgok Memorial Hall displays paintings by Saimdang and letters and memorials from Yulgok. The adjacent Gangneung City Museum showcases artifacts from the Gulsansa Temple site and Buddhist statues from Jinjeonsa Temple, offering a glimpse into the region's history and culture.
