Saint Petersburg — How to Play 🎲 and Why It's a Gem 💎

In Saint Petersburg, players buy cards to add to their tableau. They may give you money or points (or both) every round, so you want to build early to get those benefits in earlier rounds. Hard not to go broke, though! You'll want enough money to pay for aristocrats, who can help you earn a big bonus at the end of the game. Only a limited number of cards will come out each round, based on how many weren't purchased the previous round, so there's a constant dance of drafting and freeing up spots in the hopes a good card will be available for you when your turn comes around.

Designed by Bernd Brunnhofer of Hans im Glück, Saint Petersburg is a sort of transitional game. It definitely sprouted from the seeds of old-school German games, but is a card-drafting, tableau-building (small) engine builder that feels much like the lighter modern euros of today. It's definitely its own game and is just as enjoyable now as it was over 15 years ago.
