A word of introduction
Though recorded at home and never yet performed there, excepting select private performances, the Icon of our blessed Mother, L.W. 9, as is the case with my setting for voice and piano/organ/harmonium of the Hail Mary, together with which it was first uploaded onto this channel shortly after its composition in August of 2024, is strongly linked to St Wilfrid’s Anglican Church in that it was conceived while I prepared the welcoming for a Women’s Day breakfast held there on 10 August 2024. Desiring to include Novalis’s “Marienlied”, I prepared both an English and Afrikaans translation of the German text. The idea to set the text to music, [in such a way that both the original and my translations could be used interchangeably], arose soon after and was partly executed while I was serving as master of ceremonies. [Both translations are included below.]
At first conceived as requiring the accompaniment of a piano, I determined, upon being gifted my harmonium in January 2025, that a reworking of the accompaniment ought to be undertaken, so that the song could also be performed to the accompaniment both of the pipe organ and harmonium. Even so, it was not until late October/early November 2025, as things were beginning to be put in place for my conversion to holy Orthodoxy, that, in consequence of increased devotion to the most holy Theotokos and ever virgin Mary, the project was completed. Considering that my first and only previous recording featured my English translation of Novalis’s “Marienlied”, I thought it meet to record also the Afrikaans translation, the title of which has been changed since its previous publication as part of a video description.
Acknowledgments and dedication:
My most hearty thanks is due to Ed Jenkins, for having unwittingly prepared the ground for the Icon of our blessed Mother, which, had it not been for the request that I serve as MC at the aforementioned Women’s Day breakfast, may never have come into being. I reiterate, furthermore, my dedication of this humble little song to my mother, Marize Crafford

Ikoon van die heilige Theotokos
Vertaling uit die Duits van Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg/Novalis se „Marienlied“ deur
Izak R. Crafford
Ek sien u vele duisend male,
Maria, lieflik daargestel,
maar skilders geen kan in hul hale
u toon soos u my siel vertel.
Ek weet net dat die aards’ gewemel
Vir my, soos drome, weggevloei,
En dat onnoembaar soete hemel
In my gemoed vir ewig bloei.
