Following Le Quelven comes Buléon, a church whose bells I would hear nigh on every day from the house I grew up in from 2002 to 2012. This was a very deeply personal visit as I could see the tower in the distance from my house.

EN: The church of St Georges and Ste Brigitte is an interesting structure in the heart of Buléon (Breton: Buelion) in the Morbihan. There has been a stone church on this site since at least the 15th century - this cruciform Gothic building was described as ruinous by the beginning of the 19th century and by 1847, the local parish voted to demolish and rebuild it on the same foundations. Work to rebuild the church to Neo-Gothic designs of a mason by the name of Le Boëdec took place between 1849 and 1851, with the building consecrated on the 15th of November that year. Stained glass and internal works were finished in 1852.

At first, this new church only had a small wooden bellcote on the west end. By the 1960s, it was apparent that this belcote was dangerous. The growing need for water in the area prompted the parish to consider the need for a new water tower. And the church needed a tower. As such, plans were drawn up for something rather unique - a combined bell and water tower! Work started in 1962 and was finished by 1963, with the three bell (provisionally hung in a yew tree in the cemetery!) hung in the new tower that year. The reinforced concrete water tower was built first, and then the Neo-Gothic granite outer shell of the tower was built afterwards.

The three bells were cast by the Cornille-Havard bell foundry in Villedieu-les-Poeles in the early 1960s. Thank you very much to the Mairie de Buléon for allowing me to ring the bells!

FR: L’église Saint-Georges et Sainte-Brigitte est un édifice intéressant situé au cœur de Buléon (breton: Buelion), dans le Morbihan. Il existe à cet endroit une église en pierre depuis au moins le XVe siècle: cet édifice gothique en forme de croix latine était décrit comme ruiné au début du XIXᵉ siècle, et, en 1847, la paroisse décida de le démolir et de le reconstruire sur les mêmes fondations. Les travaux, réalisés selon les plans d’un maître-maçon nommé Le Boëdec, eurent lieu entre 1849 et 1851 - la nouvelle église néo-gothique fut consacrée le 15 novembre 1851. Les vitraux et les aménagements intérieurs furent achevés en 1852.

Au départ, cette nouvelle église ne possédait qu’un petit clocher en bois à l’extrémité ouest. Au cours des années 1960, ce clocher fut jugé dangereux. Parallèlement, les besoins d'eau dans la région amenèrent la paroisse à envisager la construction d’un nouveau château d’eau. Aussi, l’église avait également besoin d’un clocher. Voici un projet pour un bâtiment tout à fait original - un clocher-château d’eau combiné! Les travaux commencèrent en 1962 et furent achevés en 1963 - les trois cloches (provisoirement suspendues dans un if du cimetière) furent installées dans la nouvelle tour cette même année. Le réservoir en béton armé fut construit en premier, puis l'extérieure en granite de style néo-gothique.

Les trois cloches furent fondues par la fonderie Cornille-Havard de Villedieu-les-Poêles, en Normandie, au début des années 1960. Merci beaucoup au Mairie de Buléon pour l'autorisation de sonner les cloches!
