Saturday 20th May saw LMS Jubilee No.45596 'Bahamas' working down to the South West, with the Railway Touring Company's 'Atlantic Coast Express' tour from London Waterloo to Exeter and return. This run took the former Midland engine over Southern Region metals it had never been over before, as it worked over the section of the West of England Main Line west of Yeovil to Exeter, including the long climb of Honiton Bank. The return took it a more familiar route via Bristol, Westbury and Salisbury, itself including a stiff climb in Upton Scudamore Bank.
We start things off west of Salisbury at Baverstock, where the unique double chimney fitted Jubilee is seen working along the single line section of the West of England Main Line after Wilton Junction. Moving onto the main event of the outward run, we come to Honiton Tunnel, in readiness to capture Bahamas attacking the final piece of the 1 in 80 climb from Seaton Junction for the first time. Unbeknownst to me, the location currently resembles a building site, with much groundwork taking place inside the huge cutting. With no time to move elsewhere, it'd have to do, and so we see Bahamas lifting its 10 coach load up the gradient, with ease, in otherwise glorious conditions.
After lunch in Wellington, it was off to Burlescombe for the first return shot, up the long eastbound climb to Whiteball. As a prelude to Bahamas, we see one of GWR's Castle Sets flying along on a Penzance to Cardiff service, with power cars Nos.43016 and 43162 as the motive power. With a bit of artistic licence, we then see Bahamas hot on the tail of the Castle, as it storms past in fine style up the 1 in 115 gradient. The final shot brings us to Upton Scudamore, not far from the summit of the 1 in 76 to 1 in 70 climb up from Westbury. Closing things off, then, we see Bahamas in the dappled evening light, as it makes good progress up the bank, following a signal check at Westbury.
A fine day, with a fine machine.
