The Kalka Shimla Railway was constructed during the British rule in India, with the objective of connecting Shimla, the summer capital of the British Indian rail network. This rail network has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the steepest climb of 96 km in altitude with 800 bridges and crossovers of bridges, it is one of the most beautiful hill railways in India. It was considered the “crown jewel” of the Indian National Railways during the British period.

The Kalka Shimla Railway (KSR), a 96.6 km long single track working rail link built in the mid-19th century to serve the hill town of Shimla, is a symbol of the technological and physical efforts to decongest the hill population through railways. The world’s highest multi-arch gallery bridge at Kanoh and the world’s longest tunnel (at the time of construction) at Barog on the KSR were testimony to the brilliant engineering skills applied to make this dream a reality. The Shimla area then acquired considerable political importance as the Indian colonial government decided to build a summer residence there because of the healthy climate associated with the altitude. The question of transport to the Himalayan foothills, the Delhi area and the Gangetic plain then became important. The possibility of a rail link was mentioned as early as 1847.
