Описание к видео Highest Ranking American Officer Killed World War 1

Who was the highest-ranking American officer killed in World War 1? Although Brigadier General Lyman Kennon died during World War 1, he died of pneumonia, not enemy fire, and he wasn't even in Europe. Though there were a few senior officers that were killed by enemy fire in Europe. The first was Colonel Raynal Bolling, Assistant Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Service, who died on March 26th, 1918, during the opening days of the German spring offensive. Another was Colonel Hamilton A. Smith, who was killed by enemy machine gun fire. On July 22, 1918, during the Second Battle of the Marne. However, there was one man with a higher rank. In 1918 Edward Sigerfoos was put in command of the 56th Infantry Brigade and nominated for promotion to brigadier general. However, after only being in command for an hour, he was wounded by enemy artillery. Eventually dying of his wounds on October 7th, 1918, unaware that he was about to be promoted. And Congress, unaware that he had died, approved Sigerfoos' promotion to brigadier general on October 10th. Making "Brigadier" General Sigerfoos the highest-ranking U.S. officer killed in World War I.
