In a shocking incident of lawlessness in Punjab, an Assistant Sub Inspector of Punjab Police was shot dead by an Amritsar Shiromani Akali Dal leader Ranjit Singh Rana along with Ranbir Singh Beera who were teasing his daughter. The ASI was protesting against the eve teasing when he was shot twice and killed. Police have been unable to nab the accused even as eye witnesses said police arrived half an hour late on the spot which is right in the middle of the city.
Ravinder Pal Singh, an assistant sub inspector with the Punjab Police was confident that his uniform would protect him. His teenaged daughter had been complaining to him that she was often teased by youth when she would go for her tuitions. On Wednesday afternoon ASI Ravinder Singh got a call from his daughter that she had seen the eve teasers and decided to escort his daughter to the tuition classes. When she pointed out the youth the ASI allegedly called out to them and was ticking them off when they took out a gun and opened fire at him and his daughter who were both injured. The father daughter duo tried to take shelter when the youth drove away and came back with another gun and shot the police officer a second time, this time fatally. All this while there was no sign of any police assistance reaching the spot. ASI Ravinder was declared dead when taken to a hospital.
Enraged onlookers said they want the Akali government in Punjab to act against lawlessness on the streets. They said the police reached too late to be of any help.
Even as family members mourn the passing away of the police officer trying to protect his daughter Amritsar Police say they have registered a case and are looking out for the accused.
Akali Dal has expelled RS Rana and the police have dismissed Chheharta Police Station SHO for negligence for not responding to a distress call in time. Accused arrested.
