Today, we’re proud to announce a new Colossal de-extinction project: the legendary moa of New Zealand.

When humans first arrived on New Zealand’s islands, they encountered nine species of flightless birds known as moas. They were truly unique in the avian world as none of them had wings; not even vestigial structures. Within just 150 years, all were gone. But the moa lives on in the cultural memory of New Zealand as a symbol of wonder, loss, and possibility.

Now, that possibility moves closer to reality.

Longtime moa advocate Sir Peter Jackson joins Colossal in announcing a South Island Māori-led initiative that marks the first steps toward the de-extinction of the moa.

In this video, hear directly from Sir Peter Jackson, Colossal advisor and Senior Curator of Natural History Dr. Paul Scofield (Canterbury Museum), Colossal team members, and leaders Mike Davidson and Kyle Davis from Paenga Kupenga. Together, they explore the moa’s remarkable history, the scientific and cultural vision behind its return, and how the tools being developed for this project will support broader conservation efforts for species across New Zealand and beyond.

Bringing back a creature with such massive cultural heritage is no small feat. It takes a monumental collaboration grounded in hope, science, and respect.

This is more than de-extinction. It is restoration. Hope is taking flight, even if these birds can’t.
