A day after former police chief John Hayden was named interim St. Louis sheriff, he said he would run in a special election if Montgomery is permanently removed.

Hayden, who retired as police chief in 2022, was named interim sheriff on Wednesday. The move came after Judge Steven Ohmer temporarily removed Montgomery from office until he can face a trial in the Missouri Attorney General's effort to permanently remove him from office. Board of Aldermen President Megan Green said the board would call a special election to replace Montgomery if he is removed from office.
