The loss of vegetation cover and the deterioration of the physical properties of the soils such as texture, hydraulic conductivity, bulk density, and porosity have influenced the hydrology of the watersheds by speeding up surface runoff and reducing groundwater recharge. These in turn have impacted food security.

Spurred by the severity of the degradation of natural resources in the watershed in northern Ethiopia, Upper Blue Nile Basin, the Water and Land Resources Center (WLRC) of Addis Ababa University embarked on pilot landscape restoration initiatives in two watersheds of Aba Gerima and Debre Yacob in the Upper Blue Nile Basin, Northern Ethiopia. Through iterative planning and long period of consultations, WLRC has identified and included the partners or stakeholders in the watershed which has led to greater awareness and in decision-making as well as hands-on protection and restoration efforts. The watershed management in the learning sites has built a sense of community ownership, helped reduce conflicts, improved the natural capital and ecosystem services connected to it, and increased commitments to the actions necessary to meet environmental goals.

This video shows us how implementing sustainable land management practices through community participation has improved the availability of water and increased the resilience of land to drought and disaster in the watersheds. WLRC is planning to scale up the lessons it has learned and the experiences it has gained in neighboring watersheds and other parts of the Upper Blue Nile Basin.
