By 1954, his Bruins were 9-0 national champions, shutting out USC 34-0 and leading the nation in both offense and defense. He was the Wizard of Westwood before John Wooden ever claimed that title.

But behind the dynasty was a sophisticated pay-for-play operation. Booster clubs with fake payrolls. Cash handshakes. Players collecting money for jobs that didn't exist. Sanders didn't just look the other way — according to the conference investigation, he actively funneled recruits to the boosters holding the cash.

And four days after that vote, Red Sanders was dead of a heart attack — 53 years old, dying in the heat of a Los Angeles August, his reputation in ruins, his dynasty dismantled, his conference already gone.
