HARARE, ZIMBABWE — An American has been identified as the killer of Cecil, a lion living in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park who was loved by locals and tourists alike.

The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force on Tuesday identified Walter Palmer, 55, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, as the killer.

Palmer allegedly paid $55,000 to bag Cecil during the first week of July. Palmer and his guides lured Cecil out of the park, and Palmer shot the lion with his compound bow. The initial shot failed to kill Cecil, so the group stalked the lion for 40 hours before finally killing him. Cecil then was skinned and his head removed as a trophy.

Palmer's practice, River Bluff Dental, has since seen its social media pages flooded with searing comments and condemnation from the public. Palmer has gone into hiding. Reporters found his office closed, while his home's front door had a note saying a PR firm will handle any inquiries.

Palmer released a statement while in hiding, blaming his guides and saying that he was completely unaware of Cecil's status. Zimbabwe's police want to speak with Palmer, and his guides reportedly face up to 15 years in prison.

Cecil's death is not Palmer's first brush with trouble. In 2008 he lied to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about the precise location of where he killed a black bear in Wisconsin. He was placed on a one-year probation and fined nearly $3,000.

Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force official Johnny Rodrigues said that Jericho, Cecil's successor, will most likely kill Cecil's cubs now that Cecil is gone so that he may sire his own cubs with the lionesses in the pride.

Cecil was popular with tourists for his relaxed demeanor around safari vehicles. Bryan Orford, a wildlife guide who worked in Hwange and filmed Cecil, told National Geographic that Cecil's death represented a huge financial loss for Zimbabwe. Cecil, he said, was the park's "biggest tourist attraction." With tourists spending $9,000 a night collectively to stay at one lodge near the park, Cecil generated more revenue having his picture taken in just five days than the one-off fee Palmer paid to his guides to kill him.
