Your future performance concept:
“The Human Scanner”
Future Performance Concept: "The Human Scanner" In a world where we're increasingly fused with our technology—always plugged in, always connected. The Human Scanner brings us back to the body, to movement, to craft—while still pushing the boundaries of what tech can do on stage.
The concept: This is a journey into embodied light. Imagine the human form illuminated, scanned, and revealed through glowing clubs. These aren't just props—they're tools of transformation. They guide and react, shaping both the performer's body and the space around it. The routine uses scanning as both concept and technique. The clubs move in sleek lines, explore negative space, and carve sharp silhouettes, scanning the body in motion. Their alternating glow lets me spotlight specific areas, shifting focus like a moving lens.
Light itself becomes the trigger for movement. Instead of throwing a club, a pulse of light jumps from one to another, generating energy and direction. The result? A choreography driven by the rhythm of light.
Creative Possibilities: Use the LEDs as intimate scanners or dramatic beams Play with light across the face or body, revealing emotion in darkness Experiment with what "images" can be scanned and projected through the clubs—hands, eyes, expressions—like glimpses from a digital mirror Push it further with visual poi or holographic fan—sharing moving images mid-performance, blurring the line between juggling and digital art
The Sound: The soundtrack builds from raw, electronic scanner pulses into deep beats and textured rhythms—mirroring the tech-meets-body fusion happening onstage.
The Visuals: By tapping into retro sci-fi imagery and an analog-futuristic aesthetic, this performance aims to create a deeper connection between the performer and the technology. While LED clubs are often used to showcase abstract light patterns and visual effects, The Human Scanner shifts the focus: it's not just about the lights—it's about who's behind them. Here, technology becomes personal. The glowing clubs don't just dazzle—they reveal. They scan the body, the face, the emotion. The performer is no longer hidden behind the tech but illuminated by it, made visible through it. The nostalgic sci-fi visuals evoke a future imagined in the past. This analog-digital fusion invites the audience into a space of wonder and intimacy, where innovation doesn't distance us, but brings us closer—to ourselves, and to the performer in front of us."
Other notes on future performance ideas
"This material ties into my ongoing research with TouchDesigner and digital stage environments. I'm exploring the use of sensors to trigger projections and create interactive, responsive works. Currently, I work with white props to visually isolate them in video, but introducing brighter LED clubs opens up new creative possibilities—allowing me to experiment with higher contrast, full color spectrums, and more vivid, dynamic visuals.
Because the setup communicates with a computer via OSC (Open Sound Control), I can use live juggling data to trigger other elements in a show—ranging from visuals and sound to even robotics. This turns juggling into a form of real-time control, making the performance not just visual, but deeply interactive.
The clubs themselves also offer room for material exploration: What happens when you block part of the light source? For instance, by masking half the club, I can create moments of reveal simply by rotating it. Or I can use patterns and partial diffusion to transform the club into a kind of lantern—a light source that helps build visual narratives and deepen the storytelling."
