Some Civil War clashes involving large armies from the North and South were fought in a grand panorama, such as the Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of the Wildnerness was the opposite of that.
There was no panorama. There were savage, small, and isolated fights that occurred in blindness over a large space. The armies fought each other because that is where they happened to be.
