3 Ways to Quote Mulch Jobs:

1) (Per Yard) I prefer the all-inclusive price per yard method...which can vary a little based on unique characteristics of the job and WILL VARY based on the number of yards of mulch needed for the job.

2) (Time and Material) Markup the cost of your mulch and then charge your man hour rate for man hours involved in the job. Don't forget to account for drive time getting materials!

3) (Itemized) I have never personally used this method, but I know some companies are breaking it down to linear feet of edge and so on. This is basically time and material, just in more detail.

KEY THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN QUOTING MULCH JOBS:

1) Add or subtract from your typical quote based on factors on that specific job. Things to consider are how bad are the existing weeds in the beds? How far does the mulch have to travel from your truck or trailer to get to the beds? How well defined are the current edges?

2) Don't forget Pre-M has a cost and you need to pass that cost along to the customer in your quote!

3) Mulch and other landscape/hardscape jobs have a higher labor burden...just meaning they are more physically demanding and justify a higher hourly rate. Don't assume your mowing or spraying man hour rate should also be the same as your other services....

Tips for a happy client after you install the mulch:

1) Round up weeds a week in advance of doing the mulch installation if they are really bad. You don't want these popping right back through your fresh mulch!

2) Use a commercial pre-emergent. It will save you a lot of money compared to using Preen and many of them will outperform Preen.

3) Use bulk mulch if at all possible. It is much cheaper and more efficient than using bags.

4) Concentrate on the edges. If the mulch is overflowing onto concrete or into the grass soon after your service, your customer is not going to be happy! Scrape back all concrete borders to create a lip to retain the mulch, and cut an edge in on the turf borders using a steel spade or bed edger.

5) GET A STEEL SPADE! These things are night and day compared to a wood or fiberglass handle spade. This will make your job much easier and turn out much better.
