Star Citizen has officially released native VR support in Alpha 4.5 PTU using OpenXR implementation. This comprehensive guide covers the complete setup process, including ReShade installation with OpenXR support (essential for proper headset compatibility) and the user.cfg configuration required to enable VR mode.

This tutorial is compatible with all OpenXR-supported headsets including Pimax, Meta Quest 2/3/Pro, Valve Index, HTC Vive/Vive Pro, HP Reverb G2, and other OpenXR-compatible devices.

IMPORTANT FOR PIMAX USERS:
ReShade with OpenXR support is REQUIRED for Pimax headsets (Crystal, Crystal Super, 8KX, etc.) to function properly in Star Citizen. Without it, the game will not render correctly to your headset. Make sure to check the OpenXR option during ReShade installation.

RESHADE INSTALLATION (CRITICAL FOR PIMAX):
Download ReShade from: https://reshade.me
Run the ReShade installer
Select Star Citizen executable (StarCitizen.exe)
Choose Vulkan API
ENABLE OpenXR SUPPORT (Check the OpenXR box - essential for Pimax and most modern VR headsets)
Select desired shader packages (HDR package recommended for improved lighting)
Complete installation

WHY RESHADE OPENXR IS NECESSARY:
ReShade acts as an OpenXR API layer that bridges Star Citizen with your VR headset. Since Star Citizen's VR implementation requires proper OpenXR layer injection, ReShade provides the compatibility layer that allows your Pimax headset to properly display and render the game. Without this OpenXR layer, the game cannot communicate correctly with high-end headsets like Pimax that rely on OpenXR standards.
For Pimax Crystal/Crystal Super users, you'll also need SteamVR running to provide the VR runtime environment that works alongside ReShade's OpenXR layer.
USER.CFG CONFIGURATION:
Navigate to your Star Citizen PTU folder and create/edit user.cfg with these commands:

r_stereoDebugDrawing=1
r_StereoMode=1

VR CONTROLS:
Toggle VR Mode: Numpad /
Toggle Theater Mode: LALT + Numpad 5
Recenter View: Numpad 5

Known limitations include UI scaling issues in certain menus, performance variability depending on location, and occasional tracking inconsistencies. These issues are being addressed in future updates.
