LANTZVILLE - Having a green thumb and trying to profit from it has pit neighbour against neighbour in Lantzville. Over one hundred packed a small community hall Monday in the district just north of Nanaimo. Dozens stood and voiced their opinions on a proposed by-law to do away with commercial farming on residential lots. The majority of community members are in staunch opposition of the new legislation, and now some say the districts mayor and council could be thrown out in the next election if changes are not made.

Urban farmer Dirk Becker says the debate has become the top election issue in the small community rising ahead of water, and taxes. District mayor Colin Haime calls the dispute an emotional one, and hopes voters will acknowledge more that just the urban agriculture debate when they make their mark on November 19th.
