Rounds of Survey-NFHS

The NFHS, or National Family Health Survey, is a large-scale, multi-round survey conducted in India by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to provide data on health and family welfare indicators.

The survey, coordinated by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai, collects information on fertility, child mortality, family planning, nutrition, and other health-related topics at national and state and district levels.

To provide policymakers and implementing agencies with data on health and family welfare to set benchmarks, assess program effectiveness, and address emerging health issues.

Five rounds of the survey have been completed, starting with the first in 1992-1993. The most recent, NFHS-5, was conducted from 2019-2021, and the current round, NFHS-6, began in 2023.

Rounds of Survey-NFHS

The first DHS survey in India as NFHS took place in 1992-93 (NFHS -1).

The focus was on generating national and state-level data on fertility, family size preferences, knowledge and practice of family planning, and related topics.

It was designed to explore the demographic and socioeconomic determinants of fertility, family planning, and maternal and child health outcomes.

The database was intended to assist policymakers and researchers in assessing and evaluating family welfare programmes and strategies.

NFHS-2, conducted in 1998-99, canvassed information on some of the same topics covered in the first round. Additionally, it included questions relating to the quality of health and family welfare services provided by the government, reproductive health problems, the autonomy of women, and domestic violence.‪@odialearning9582‬
