CLASSIC is one of the codified preliminary, also called "gauge", delivered after the jousters' bow and prior to the free jousting stage. CLASSIC aligns both jousters' body thru four strikes (Left and right) in a static stance but involving hips and breathing. Jousters are relax with their attacks coming from the rear, sticks suspended on the back. Then, CLASSIC strengthens both jousters thru strong but controlled upper attacks with the stick held by both hands. Hips are fully mobillized, hands hold the stick firmly but with no tension. At his stage CLASSIC builds up an unified body & soul in a dynamic sequence. Both jousters use basic footwork to deliver alternatively engaged left and right defense - attacks targeting the head. Even if they are blocked by the opponent's defense, attacks are delivered with power and control.

Basically, the joust's preliminary stage is constitutive of an engaged and respectful combat. It builds up the right jousting spirit. Each step of a given preliminary ramps up the readiness and discernment of both jousters.
