This probably looks so goddamn easy, but it’s worse than the Aquadra- I mean BULLSHIT BROS™…
Gilland and Celsius are a deadly combination with a lot of tricks up their sleeves. Namco apparently also did a good job at programming Gilland’s AI: when he’s far away from you, he will use Squall Shot and Icicle more to get on your nerves, and when he realizes you’re not moving, he’ll prefer Zero Divide to snipe you. His counters also come out rather quickly, though they’re all manageable. Incendiary Arc deserves mentioning since it has a hitbox that reaches very high, so paying attention to which counter Gilland’s about to use and making an extra jump away if it is indeed Incendiary Arc are a must. His second normal move also has him side-stepping/rolling which is quite annoying in a no Free Run setting. Heal Shot is stupid as usual with its almost non-existing activation time and the fact that Gilland doesn’t have the decency to not use it in OVL (though admittedly, it’s not that bad with a DA equipped). Banishing Ray gives Gilland infinite penetrate, but since it has a long startup time, you can react to it most of the time and deal some good damage while doing so.
However, Gilland isn’t all that bad. No, Celsius is largely to blame why this fight is a huge chore to no damage. You might think that as long as you distract her with Binding Sphere and get away from her with Radiant Rondo (Divine Streak), you’ll be fine, and for the most part, that’s true. But she has one move that can and will screw your game of taking out Gilland: Frost Spears. During the move, she slides on the ground, covering a remarkable distance and letting icicles fall down behind her. While dodging her slide is cake, the icicles are what kills it since they appear out of nowhere in mid-air, meaning that even if you jump over here, you will most likely get hit. In and of itself, it’s not too difficult to dodge (quickly jump over Celsius while keeping low), but it becomes a real pain when dealing with Gilland because in 99% (ok made that number up, but) of all cases you won’t be in a position to avoid it. The worst thing about it is how often she likes to use it, and since this is still Xillia, she might just use the move multiple times in a row until she finally hits you. Being in motion can help depending on her position when she starts the move, but that’s the thing – there is no bullet-proof way of dealing with it due to this being a 3D game. There is one remedying aspect: the icicles disappear the second Celsius gets staggered. The best thing to do, then, is to pin both Gilland and her down and get rid of the former asap so you can fully concentrate on Celsius.
But don’t think this is where it ends – no, this is where the BS starts. Once Celsius’ HP drop below 50%, she gains regular access to some new moves, namely Icy Calamity, Ice-Blade Deluge, and Cold Prison. And guess why these 3 moves are so brilliant? ALL of them give her INFINITE PENETRATE. BULLSHIT BROS™ pale in comparison to this kind of ridiculousness. While Icy Calamity has enough of a startup time to evade it in most cases, the other two are just messed up. Whenever you would normally stagger Celsius, the infinite penetrate will prevent you from doing so, and you will most likely have no chance to react and get away. Cold Prison even locks on to your position – awesome! And even though this battle is relatively short and I didn’t spend too much time on Celsius alone, you don’t want to know how often I’ve beaten Gilland only to fall victim to this absurd mechanic. You can’t predict it, you can’t do anything against it, and with 3 Artes that have it, your chances of not encountering it are slim. I’m not joking, I’ve spent around 7 hours to get this one take. Considering how short the end result is, you do the math and tell me to how many attempts this roughly amounts...
