Описание к видео NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY

An Atom and the Nucleus
An atom consists of three primary subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. The nucleus at the center of the atom contains protons and neutrons, while electrons orbit the nucleus in regions called electron shells.
Composition of an Atom:
• Protons and Neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom, which contains almost all of the atom's mass.
• Electrons, which are much lighter than protons and neutrons, orbit around the nucleus in the electron cloud. The number of electrons in an atom equals the number of protons, making the atom electrically neutral.
The nucleus is extremely small compared to the size of the entire atom, accounting for almost all of its mass but only a tiny fraction of its volume. The behavior and interactions of the nucleus are critical in processes such as nuclear reactions, including fission and fusion. These properties make the nucleus fundamental to understanding atomic structure and chemistry. The nucleus is held together by the strong nuclear force, a powerful force that overcomes the repulsion between the positively charged protons. The protons and neutrons are tightly packed in the nucleus, making it very dense, while the surrounding electrons orbit the nucleus at relatively large distances.
Properties of Protons:
1. Charge: Protons have a positive charge (+1) and contribute to the overall positive charge of the nucleus.
2. Mass: Protons have a mass of approximately 1 atomic mass unit (amu).
3. Location: Protons are located in the nucleus of the atom.
4. Stability: Protons are stable and do not decay under normal conditions.
5. Role: The number of protons in an atom determines its atomic number, which defines the element (e.g., hydrogen has 1 proton, carbon has 6).
Properties of Neutrons:
1. Charge: Neutrons are neutral and have no electrical charge.
2. Mass: Neutrons are slightly heavier than protons, with a mass of approximately 1 amu.
3. Location: Neutrons are also located in the nucleus.
4. Stability: Neutrons are unstable outside the nucleus and decay into a proton, electron, and antineutrino in a process called beta decay (β-decay).
5. Role: Neutrons help stabilize the nucleus by mitigating the repulsive forces between protons due to their positive charge.
The balance between protons and neutrons determines the stability and isotope forms of the atom.
