It was February 11th, 1992, and Soviet Union had dissolved some 2 months earlier, but the United States Navy still wanted to keep a close eye on Russia's still powerful navy. USS Baton Rouge, SSN 689, was lurking 20 meters deep in shallow waters of off Kildin island, 14 miles from Russian port of Murmansk. At 8:16 local time, something gigantic struck the Baton Rouge from below, that scratched the submarine's hull, and caused tears in ballast tank. It turned out that a Russian Sierra class nuclear powered attack submarine, the B-276 Kostroma, attempted to surface underneath the U.S submarine. The Russian submarine's conning tower impacted the Baton Rogue's belly so hard that later US submarine's anti sonar tiles were found embedded on it's surface. Fortunately, nuclear reactors on both vessels remained intact, and both submarines returned to port for repairs. It was America's one of very first diplomatic incidents with newly born Russian government! The U.S assured that it would reduce its spying in Russian waters, but guess what. Another collision occured the same year off Kola peninsula.
