US Democrats have rallied alongside hundreds of protesters outside the Treasury department in Washington after it was reported billionaire Elon Musk has gained access to the federal payments system.

Senator Chris Van Hollen said "We need to fight this all over America. And we need to make sure that the billionaires don't take this country away from the working people of America. That's what it's all about. Stop the coup. Stop the grift. Stop Elon Musk. Take our country back."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer later said in a press conference that congressional leaders will push legislation this week to "prevent unlawful meddling" by the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the Treasury Department payment system.
