Joaquin Phoenix went so far in on #BAFTAsoWhite, he nearly walked away without his award. Phoenix took home the statuette for best leading actor for his role in Joker.

Among the most stunningly refreshing bits of his acceptance speech, Phoenix admits he is part of the problem and says he (and all of them) need to do better:

"I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you're not welcome here...I don't think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment—although that's what we give ourselves every year."
