Over the last twenty years, I have helped more than 3700 patients with knee and hip replacement surgeries and I am a big believer in preserving the natural knee joint by doing a knee-joint preservation surgery.

The cost of your knee replacement surgery depends on many factors:

1. The Diseases You Have - Besides arthritis, if you also have hypertension, blood sugar, or cardiac problems, multiple specialists like cardiologists and nephrologists have to be involved in your surgery to ensure your body is ready for the operation. This will increase the cost of your surgery. A ballpark figure for the cost of your surgery in Delhi in 2023 would be 2.5 lakh rupees. ICUs, if needed will cost extra.

2. The Implant Type - The Govt. of India has standardized two implant types - each costing approx. 60k and 80k respectively. Unlike a THR, here both types of implants are cemented. All knee replacement in India uses the cemented procedure.

3. The Hospital You Choose - Depending on the institute you decide to go to for the surgery, your price might go up by 20-25k, or get reduced by 10-15k. It all depends on you.

#1 - Bone Quality. If your bones are weak, your implants may become loose very quickly. Why? Because weaker bones allow the foreign implants to sink into your weak bones. And that ensures it won't last as long.

#2 Alignment of your leg/placement of your implant - This is one area where technology helps a lot. If your leg is crooked naturally, your implant needs to be placed accordingly. This is why these days we use robotics to place implants and align them perfectly.

#3 FDA Approval - USA's FDA Approval is still the gold standard for a knee replacement that lasts really long. If your implant has the FDA's seal of approval you can rest assured your new knee is in good hands.
